Norman Lindsay - Galleon's End

The original etching of Galleon's End was etching in 1937 in an edition of only 25 and rarely comes onto the market. Norman etching very few oceanic scenes and Galleon's End is a wonderful complement to his underwater world, Atlantis.
Norman was fascinated with ships and spent many long hours in the British Museum when in London in 1910 drawing and sketching the ships in their collection. These images were the basis for many of his artworks in pencil, pen and ink, etching, watercolour and oil
as well as his extensive collection of ship models which he built throughout his working life.
There are only six published etchings which depict ships, boats or barges, either on top or under the water and these are The Happy Barge, Lands of Afternoon, Night's Frolic, Odysseus and Unknown Seas.
An original etching of Galleon's End is in the collection of the Unviersity of Melbourne and the Mitchell Library, Sydney has ten proofs showing five states giving us a wonderful insight on how Norman built up his etchings until he was satisfied with the final image.
